Our website is slow on phones
On office Wi-Fi the site seems fine. On a phone with mobile data it takes so long that people go back to the search results.
Google rates a page as “good” when its main content appears within 2.5 seconds, measured on real visitors' phones. You can test any page free at pagespeed.web.dev. Slow sites are almost always slow for the same reasons: oversized images, too many scripts and fonts, and cheap or distant hosting. Fixing images alone often makes the largest difference.
Measure it yourself
Open pagespeed.web.dev
It is Google's free testing tool. Enter your website address.
Read the mobile result
Mobile is the default tab. Look at Largest Contentful Paint, which is how long the main content takes to appear.
Compare with the thresholds
Good is 2.5 seconds or less for loading, 200 milliseconds or less to respond to a tap, and a layout shift score of 0.1 or less.
Try it on mobile data
Turn off Wi-Fi and open your site on a phone. That is what most of your visitors experience.
Thresholds from web.dev, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads.
The usual causes
- Huge images. Photos uploaded straight from a camera, several megabytes each.
- Video that loads at once. A background video on the home page.
- Many scripts. Sliders, animations, chat widgets and trackers, each one a download.
- Several font files. Each weight and style is another file.
- Heavy page builders. Themes that load everything on every page.
- Slow hosting. A crowded server, or one far from your visitors with no content delivery network.
Phones and mobile data are the norm
In September 2026, 62.8% of web page views in Namibia were on phones (StatCounter). Namibia's median fixed broadband download speed was 15.51 Mbps in August 2025 (DataReportal), and mobile data is paid for by the megabyte. A heavy page costs your visitor both time and money.
Lighter pages also use less energy to send and display. Doing the job with less is good practice, not only good manners.
Fixes in order of effect
- Resize and compress every image, and load images only as they scroll into view
- Remove scripts and plugins the site does not need
- Use system fonts or a single font file
- Serve the site from a content delivery network close to visitors
- Measure again and show you the before and after
This site follows the same rules: no web fonts, no framework, one stylesheet and compressed images. Test it at pagespeed.web.dev and compare.
Common questions
Does speed affect Google ranking?
Page experience is one of the things Google considers, and speed is part of it. More directly, slow pages lose visitors before they read anything.
Can a slow site be fixed without rebuilding it?
Often. Image and script fixes can be done on the existing site. If the slowness comes from the theme or page builder underneath, a rebuild is the lasting fix.
