Our website looks outdated
The site was fine when it was built. Now it shows old prices, breaks on a phone and makes the organisation look less capable than it is.
An outdated website costs trust: visitors judge the organisation by it before they ever speak to you. Judge yours on four things: does it work on a phone, is the information correct, is the connection secure, and can you update it yourself. If it fails two or more, a rebuild is usually cheaper than repeated repairs.
Judge your own site
- Phone. Open it on a phone. Can you read it without zooming and tap the links without missing?
- Facts. Are the prices, hours, staff, address and phone number all current?
- Security. Does the address start with https, with no “not secure” warning?
- Control. Does anyone in the organisation know how to change a sentence on it?
- Date. Does the footer show a year that has passed?
- Links. Do any pages or buttons lead to an error?
Repair or rebuild
| Situation | Usually |
|---|---|
| Design is fine, facts are old | Repair: update the content |
| Works on a computer, poor on a phone | Rebuild |
| Nobody can log in or edit it | Recover access, then decide |
| Built on software that is no longer updated | Rebuild |
| Organisation has changed what it does | Rebuild |
Rebuild without losing what works
- Review the current site and list what is still accurate and useful
- Keep your domain name and email addresses
- Rebuild for phones first, with current content
- Redirect every old address to its new page, so links and search results keep working
- Hand over the logins and show you how to make simple updates
See website redesign. To stop it happening again, a care plan keeps content and software current.
Common questions
How often should a website be redesigned?
There is no fixed interval. Redesign when it stops working on current phones, when the organisation changes, or when it can no longer be updated. Content should be reviewed far more often than design.
Can we keep our current address?
Yes. The domain stays the same, so printed material, email addresses and links keep working.
